Symbols of the Harlot – Part V

How many of you recognize the map headlining today’s blog post? What if I told you, that map, drawn by Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant (a Freemason from the Holland Lodge No. 8 at 66 Crown Street, New York City), was more than just the basis for what would become the most powerful city in the history of the world, but that this map also connected the lives of several influential Americans to an ancient Biblical prophecy in a most surprising way?

Pretty incredible claim, don’t you think?

Well, if you read any of the articles in this series, then you already know that the history we’ve explored together is truly stranger than fiction, but in this blog post we are going to exemplify that axiom in a way that will forever change how you look at Masonry’s influence on early American history.

Today, we are going to explore how Major L’Enfant’s unusual design for the Federal City (later to be known as Washington D.C.), intertwined the lives of George Washington, the first President of the United States, Charles Thomson, the Secretary of the Continental Congress, Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant, and Confederate Brigadier General & Sovereign Grand Commander of Scottish Rite Freemasonry Albert Pike, the famous confederate war criminal, Freemason, and racist.

Our story beings in 1791 when President George Washington, authorized by an act of Congress, appointed Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant to design the Federal City of the United States which later became known as Washington City and subsequently the federal District of Columbia. L’Enfant immediately set to work under the guidance of a three person commission. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson also advised L’Enfant and the design committee during this time.

The focus of the map was centered on Jenkin’s Hill (Francis Pope’s original Rome Hill) which L’Enfant designated with the longitude of 0:0. L’Enfant described Jenkin’s Hill as a “pedestal awaiting a monument”. Later Thomas Jefferson renamed Jenkins hill, Capitol Hill in honor of the ancient Roman republic upon which many of our founders sought to pattern our new government.

It turns out L’Enfant was a rather disagreeable man and after nearly a year George Washington replaced him with Andrew Ellicott. Ellicott made several minor changes to L’Enfant’s map but the overall design was not materially changed.

A Map with Masonic Symbolism
Conspiracy theorists have long claimed that Washington DC was designed with occult symbolism in mind. Like a giant city size dot to dot, pentagrams, compasses, crosses, triangles, pyramids, and other occult patterns have been found but the contextual justification for them being part of a larger “conspiracy” is often lacking. Kind of like a constellation of stars without the story, just a bunch of points, lines, and vivid imaginations.

But there is at least one true story in all the points and lines of L’Enfant’s map. The story begins with Charles Thomson’s seal in 1782. In our last blog post Symbols of the Harlot – Part IV, we learned that Thompson’s design for the reverse of the Great Seal featured a 13 level unfinished pyramid, the capstone of which (the 14th level) hung over the unfinished work with its ever watchful and radiant eye of “Divine Providence”. That’s the official story given for public consumption anyway. L’Enfant’s map provides us with a different version of that story. Here take a look at L’Enfant’s map once more.

As you can see from this overlay, a pyramid centered on the White House can be drawn over L’Enfant’s original design. This pyramid is not arbitrary, as you will find faint lines on L’Enfant’s map which represent it. (click on the map to enlarge) The design begins to move from circumstantial to intentional when you realize that there are 13 levels to this pyramid ending at what we know today as Dupont and Logan circles. Here take a look at a Google version of the map as it is today:

But that’s not the real surprise. Notice in the satellite version of the map that in the capstone of the pyramid there is a rather large building on the East side of 16th street corresponding to the All-Seeing Eye in Charles Thomson’s design of the Great Seal.


That building has a rather interesting history. The building was designed by John Russell Pope in 1910. Construction began in 1911 with the ceremonial cornerstone being laid on October 18, 1911. The building, modeled after the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, is 130 tall and surrounded by 33 columns, each 33 feet high. The roof has 13 layers which from street level gives it the appearance of an unfished pyramid. When looking down from above one can see the 14th level is a glass capstone completing the pyramid shaped roof as can be seen in this Google map view of the building below.

Based upon L’Enfants original design this building resides on the 14th city block from the US Capitol building. Or in other words there are 13 blocks between it and the US Capitol. By now you’ve probably got an inkling of this buildings identity. To save you further guessing let me show you what is written over the bronze entrance door of this impressive building:

“Freemasonry Builds its Temples in the Hearts of Men and among Nations”

The building is called the House of the Temple and is the headquarters of Scottish Rite Freemasonry’s 33 degree Supreme Council also known as the Mother Council of the World. So right where the All-Seeing Eye is represented on Charles Thomson’s original design of the Great Seal we have represented – on a map of Washington, D.C. – a Masonic Temple which is home to Freemasonry’s Mother Council of the World.

Hard to call this all a coincidence, isn’t it?

With what we have learned about Masonry in the last several articles, the symbolism is rather obvious. The Scottish Rite Freemasonry Mother Council of the World sees their organization as the watchful eye, the guiding light, and the protector of the United States government. Their guidance brings with it a world view that is anathema to the Judeo-Christian principles that we and many of our founders held dear. That world view we now know as secular humanism.

I know it is rather difficult to fathom, but Freemasonry, by their own admission, is a secretive organization which by its own traditions traces its origins to ancient Babylon; an organization that proudly believes, it has a responsibility to influence the affairs of our country and guide our nation towards a secular humanist utopia.

Let’s briefly look at this goal of a secular humanist utopia in the words of one of its respected adherents, 33 Degree Freemason, Manly P. Hall. Take a few moments to read the following quotes from Hall’s book, The Secret Destiny of America written in 1944:

The Purpose of Secret Societies

For more than three thousand years, secret societies have labored to create the background of knowledge necessary to the establishment of an enlightened democracy among the nations of the world … The Creek Dionysians were social and political temple builders, known as the Collegians in later Rome. … The rise of the Christian Church brought persecution of the classical intellectual pattern’s ideology, driving the guilds into greater secrecy; but all have continued searching for human happiness under a variety of rituals and symbols; and they still exist, as the Order of the Quest.

Today’s thinking toward a democratic world state is neither a new trend nor an accidental circumstance; the work of setting up the background of knowledge necessary to the establishing of enlightened democracy among all nations has been carried on for many hundreds of years by secret societies….

Secret societies have had concealment and protection as the first purpose for their existence. The members of these orders were party to some special knowledge, they usually took part in certain rites and rituals not available to non-members, but it was more important that through the societies they were also able to practice beliefs and doctrines in private for which they would have been condemned and persecuted if these rites were made public.

A second purpose for secret societies was to create a mechanism for the perpetuation from generation to generation of policies, principles, or systems of learning, confined to a limited group of selected and initiated persons. Sir Francis Bacon and the New Atlantis

Rawley writes in his introduction to Bacon’s the New Atlantis, “This fable My Lord devised, to the end that he might exhibit therein, a model or description of a college, instituted for the interpreting of nature, and the producing of great and marvelous works, for the benefit of men; under the name of Solomon’s house, or the college of the six days work.” The college of the six days work is, of course, a thinly veiled reference to the perfection of nature through art. The six days are the days of creation by which the natural world was brought into existence, according to the account given in Genesis. As God created the Universe in six symbolic days, so man by art– that is, philosophy–must create the condition of his own perfection by means of six philosophical steps. (Hall, Manly P.. The New Atlantis [Sir Francis Bacon’s] describes the magnificence of the college of the six days work…

It is difficult to understand how this reference to a secret order has passed unnoticed for so long, for it is scarcely less than a proclamation of the Society of Unknown Philosophers. The name of the land in which stood the Wise Man’s City was Bensalem; this means the Son of Peace. Bensalem maintained a trade with all parts of the world, but not for gold, silver, jewels, silks, spices, nor any other material commodity; its merchandise was the Light of Truth. Among the nations traded with was Atlantis, which was declared to be the same as America. (Hall, Manly P.. The Secret Destiny of America Kindle Locations 941-952)

The University of Six Days Work

The great University of the Six Days Work must be built here in our Western world, to become a guide unto the nations. About this shrine to Universal Truth shall rise the democratic Commonwealth–the wealth of all mankind. This is the destiny for which we were brought into being. The plan, which was devised in secrecy long ago, and in far places, shall be fulfilled openly … as the greatest wonder born out of time. (Hall, Manly P.. In America shall be erected a shrine to Universal Truth, as here arises the global democratic Commonwealth–the true wealth of all mankind, which is designed in the foundation that men shall abide together in peace and shall devote their energies to the common cause of discovery.

… The power of man lies in his dreams, his visions, and his ideals. This has been the common vision of man’s necessity in the secret empire of the Brotherhood of the Quest, consecrated to fulfilling the destiny for which we in America were brought into being. A Masonic Timeline
To be sure not all founders or even all Masons saw the founding of our nation as the “college of six days work” as described by Hall. But it is indisputable that Masonry today does in fact see itself as the guardians of the philosophy which leads mankind to the light of knowledge and liberty. Briefly let’s look at the Masonic timeline of the Great Seal and related events so you understand the chronological context of their powerful influence on America, its government, and institutions.

The Great Seal with its pyramid and All-Seeing Eye became the official emblems of the United States.


L’Enfant’s plan of Washington, D.C., incorporated this same Pyramid and Capstone.


Scottish Rite Freemasonry added a finishing touch to the map of Washington, D.C., in 1911, when they laid the cornerstone for their House of the Temple. From this date forward they boldly proclaimed their influence on the United States government.


Do you know that up until 1935 the reverse side of the Great Seal (the pyramid and eye) was basically unknown to the American populous? For all intents and purposes, it had remained hidden from public view. Then in 1934 Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture (future vice president of the US), suggested to President Roosevelt that he place the Great Seal on a US coin. Keep in mind here that at this time Wallace and Roosevelt were both 32nd degree Freemasons. Here is Wallace’s account:

“In 1934, when I was Secretary of Agriculture, I was waiting in the outer office of Secretary Hull, and as I waited I amused myself by picking up a State Department publication which was on the stand there entitled, The History of the Seal of the United States. Turning to page 53, I noted the colored reproduction of the reverse side of the Seal. The Latin phrase Novus Ordo Seclorum impressed me as meaning the New Deal of the Ages. Therefore I took the publication to President Roosevelt and suggested a coin be put out with the obverse and reverse side of the seal. Roosevelt, as he looked at [the] colored reproduction of the Seal, was first struck with the representation of the ‘All-Seeing Eye,’ a representation of The Great Architect of the Universe. Next he was impressed with idea that the foundation for the new order of the ages had been laid in 1776, but that it would be completed only under the eye of the Great Architect. Roosevelt, like myself, was a 32nd degree Mason, He suggested that the Seal be put out on the dollar bill rather than a coin, and took the matter up with the Secretary of the Treasury.”

Interestingly, it was Roosevelt who placed the pyramid with the All-Seeing Eye in the primary position on the one dollar bill instead of the secondary position where it would have naturally been placed due to its subordinate position on the reverse side of the Seal. In any case, it was 1935, when the Great Seal was represented on our currency and since that day has become the most recognizable symbol of the United States.

Few serious scholars of Masonic history underestimate the influence Albert Pike had on Freemasonry in America during the 20th century. Many consider him the guiding light of American Masonry. Pike was so important to Freemasonry that even though he was a Confederate war criminal and a racist, he is the only Confederate soldier to be honored with an outdoor statue in Washington, D.C.

Pike was the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry from 1859 until his death in 1891. Upon his death, he was buried in Oak Hill cemetery, but in 1944 his remains were exhumed and then reburied (by a special act of Congress) in the House of the Temple in honor of his profound influence on American Freemasonry. Pike’s writings, especially his magnum opus – Morals and Dogma, codified for Freemasonry the enlightened (luciferian) humanist philosophy which has been the driving force of Masonry to this day. It’s perfectly fitting that Pike’s remains now have that honored position in the House of the Temple as a talisman of Masonry’s philosophical humanist enlightenment.

By the mid 1940’s, thanks to the appointments of Freemasonic President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Supreme Court was packed with a majority of men who were Freemasons. This court was instrumental in undermining Judeo-Christian principles in the public sphere. This pivotal point in US history was the catalyst which accelerated America’s moral decline and which led to secular humanism as the de facto law of the land.

2008 – It’s No Longer a Secret
It’s rather sobering to realize that Masons like Manly P. Hall see Masonry’s influence in the American affairs as part of a larger effort related to Sir Francis Bacon’s so called “college of six days work”. It’s further sobering to consider that in 2008 the World Council of Freemasonry held their annual World Masonic Congress in Washington, D.C.,and as part of this momentous occasion they issued commemorative coins to attendees which boldly show their view of where Masonry stands in relation to the founding of the United States and their part in the Novus Ordo Seclorum (New Order of the Ages).

Notice any pretexted that Judeo-Christian God was the watchful eye over the American enterprise has been removed and replaced with the masonic symbols of the square and compass. Also notice that on the base of the pyramid the date 1776 has been replace with the year 6008 Anno Lucis (year of the light). This date acknowledges that the college of six days work (six thousand years) has been achieved and now Masonry has entered that prophesied utopian age, its seventh millennium, the prophesied 1000 years have arrived and Masonry and its “god” of knowledge and enlightenment is there to guide humanity into this new age.

The All-Seeing Eye of Masonry
As disturbing as the symbolism is to many of you, I don’t want you to finish this article without truly understanding, how Masonry sees the All-Seeing Eye and the “god” this eye represents – it bears repeating in their own words:

The combination of the Phoenix, the pyramid, and the all-seeing eye is more than chance or coincidence. There is nothing about the early struggles of the colonists to suggest such a selection to farmers, shopkeepers, and country gentlemen. There is only one possible origin for these symbols, and that is the secret societies which came to this country 150 years before the Revolutionary War. Most of the patriots who achieved American independence belonged to these societies, and derived their inspiration, courage, and high purpose from the ancient teaching. There can be no question that the great seal was directly inspired by these orders of the human Quest, and that it set forth the purpose far this nation as that purpose was seen and known to the Founding Fathers. The All-Seeing Eye may have denoted the Divine omniscience. Also, it may have symbolized any one or more of some five or six other truths or ideas. It may have denoted the sun originally, as it came up at dawn – it had been thus used by Shakespeare and many other writers. It may have meant the Grand Master or the worshipful Master, and been a reminder of the fact that wherever a man is and in whatever he may be doing he continues to be a Mason, and the eye of the Craft is on him. It may have stood for enlightenment, wisdom, intelligence ; and it may have been the Tracing Board representation of the Blazing Star in the Tessellated Pavement, in which case it was again the sun, or day-star, which shines on through day and night. That Osiris and Isis were the Sun and Moon, is attested by many ancient writers; by Diogenes Laertius, Plutarch, Lucian, Suidas, Macrobius, Martianus Capella, and others. His power was symbolized by an Eye over a Sceptre. The Sun was termed by the Greeks the Eye of Jupiter, and the Eye of the World; and his is the All-Seeing Eye in our Lodges…

Osiris was the same God known as Bacchus, Dionusos, and Serapis. Serapis is the author of the regularity and harmony of the world. (Albert Pike, Morals and Dogma p.307.)

The Masonic World View verses the Christian World View
This series of blog posts has looked at the ancient religion of Mystery Babylon first introduced to mankind by the Serpent in Eden. This new religious doctrine promised mankind that if they eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil they would become gods. In its essence this doctrine is humanism. It is the belief that mankind outside of the direction, commandments, or instructions of YHWH can attain divinity or in other words mankind, by our own efforts can raise ourselves to be equal to YHWH, the living God of the Bible.

This humanist philosophy has been perfected by the secretive organization we know today as Freemasonry. I want to make clear here that this is not a struggle against individual masons. I have friends and acquaintances who are masons and they are no worse or better people than you and I. The problem is that Masonry as an organization has as its core the religious philosophy of Mystery Babylon and they have promoted that philosophy more effectively than any other organization in the history of the world. Always remember the struggle is not with flesh and blood:

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12)

Remember Masonry is just one of the many faces of Mystery Babylon. In these articles I’ve used their history as it relates to the founding and influence on the United States, because it perfectly illustrates their goals and their methods and symbols used in achieving those goals.

America is just one of many nations of this world. Our greatness to the extent any of this world’s nations and institutions have any inherent greatest, is directly proportional to the respect and willingness their citizens have to follow the Judeo-Christian principles given by YHWH, the living God of the Bible.

In a quote attributed to the French philosopher Alexis De Tocqueville when visiting America in search of the reasons for her greatness, it is believed he said the following:

“America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

No matter who wrote those words they are definitely worth repeating and remembering because they echo an ancient proverb:

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34)

Contrasting the Symbolism of Masonry and the Bible
As you have seen in this article, Masonry and the Bible have competing eschatological world views. These world views, in the not too distant future, will require all mankind to choose sides. So that you are prepared to stand, let’s once more contrast these opposing views.

Masonry’s humanist philosophy is eloquently illustrated by Freemasonic scholar William J. Hutchinson (1732-1814) in the following quote from his lecture entitled The Spirit of Masonry:

Masonry directs us to divest ourselves of confined and bigoted notions, and teaches us, that Humanity is the soul of Religion. We never suffer any religious disputes in our Lodges, and, as Masons, we only pursue the universal religion, the Religion, of Nature.

Worshipers of the God of Mercy, we believe that in every nation, he that feareth Him and worketh righteousness is accepted of Him. All Masons, therefore, whether Christians, Jews, or Mahomedans, who violate not the rule of right, written by the Almighty upon the tables of the heart, who Do fear Him, and WORK righteousness, we are to acknowledge as brethren; and, though we take different roads, we are not to be angry with, or persecute each other on that account.
We mean to travel to the same place; we know that the end of our journey is the same; and we affectionately hope to meet in the Lodge of perfect happiness.

Now contrast this with the New Testament’s explanation of how mankind reaches the eternal state of happiness:

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:4-9)

Our future dwelling with Christ comes not by our own works, but rather it is a free gift of YHWH. Paul explains that the reason salvation is a gift is so that mankind cannot boast in our own efforts. Do you understand that Paul here is challenging the very heart of Mystery Babylon’s religion? The humanist promises that mankind by our own efforts will become gods and this philosophy is the core of Freemasonry.

To really drive this home, here is a quote and picture from 33rd degree Freemason, Manly P. Hall’s book, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry which represents this philosophy in occult symbolism:

“In this picture is concealed the allegory of the Lost Word. The Master Mason, having completed his labors, becomes a worker on a higher plane than the one in which the ordinary builder is permitted to work. The Master Mason becomes the capstone of the Universal Temple.”

Do you understand how blasphemous this statement really is? Remember when Yeshua spoke to the religious leaders of His day telling them that He was the stone which the builders rejected which would become the “head” or capstone of the corner (building).

Satan’s challenge to Gods authority hasn’t changed since Eden. Just like the religious leaders of Yeshua’s day, today’s Masonry rejects Yeshua as the capstone and in His place they elevate themselves and mankind.

Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Matthew 21:42-44)

For those of you who want to challenge the doctrine of humanism as expressed by words and symbolism of Freemasonry, the apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, especially chapter 2, is a powerful rebuttal. As quoted above in Ephesians 2:4-8, Paul explains how salvation is not by our own works but by YHWH’s grace through Yeshua’s atoning blood. Paul goes even further in chapter 2 by speaking against one of the chief symbols of Masonry, i.e. humanity as the capstone. He explains how Yeshua, not mankind, is the chief cornerstone.

But there is another powerful symbolic challenge to Masonry in Ephesians 2 and it gets to the very heart of the message that a 13 level pyramid and its 14th level capstone are mankind’s ticket to heaven.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them…

But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;…

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:8-22)

Never loose sight of the fact that salvation is by faith, God’s gracious gift to mankind, namely Yeshua (YHWH’s Salvation). Next, Paul explains that because of Yeshua’s death and resurrection (his blood atonement), mankind, both Jews and Gentiles, now have access to God and by extension, eternal life.

For those of you who have read my book The 13th Enumeration: Key to the Bible’s Messianic Symbolism, you already understand the symbolism Paul is trying to express in Ephesians 2:13-14. For those who have not read the book you’ll be thrilled to understand the symbolism Paul is expressing here.

During the 2nd temple only Jewish people could approach the temple proper and by extension the presence of God. The gentiles where prohibited from approaching the temple proper by a wall which had a warning written on it, that any gentile who stepped beyond the barrier would be put to death. Paul explained that by Yeshua’s death and resurrection this barrier was broken down. During the time period when Yeshua and the apostles walked those ancient stones, that barrier was accessed by 14 steps and entry into the temple was accessed through one of 13 gates. 13 & 14 were the symbolic barriers which separated mankind from the presence of God and by implication eternal life.

Now contrast this with Masonry view of mankind’s journey through life (represented by a pyramid of 13 levels) and mankind’s reaching the status as a god (represented by the capstone, the 14th level).

And just in case you don’t get the total picture, the apostle Paul finishes Ephesian’s 2 by explaining that Yeshua (the 13th & 14th generation of Matthew 1) is in fact the capstone under which all mankind is gathered into a “holy temple in the Lord”.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 

In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

So I have one final question for you …

Who is the capstone (head) of your temple?

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?

for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (2 Corinthians 6:14-16)

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:15-16 )

Symbols of the Harlot – Part IV



Nearly everyone recognizes the images reproduced in this week’s blog post. In fact, nearly every American citizen and a great many citizens of the world have held a version of these famous American symbols in their hand over the course of their life.

To some the symbol on the left represents (among other things) the benevolence and watchfulness of God over the founding of our new nation. To others, especially over the past century, the symbol has become tangible evidence of some grand conspiracy originated by our founding fathers.

As with many versions of history, the truth is sometimes more complicated and fascinating than either side is often willing to admit. Today, let’s explore the Great Seal of the United States, that famous symbol of patriots and conspiracy theorists.

The Great Seal, like few other American symbols, represents the complexity, intrigue, and world views of America’s founders and the people they had the responsibility of governing. I think you’ll be surprised at how some of our founding fathers saw the symbolism of the Great Seal, but even more intriguingly, how one of the 19th and 20th century’s most influential secret societies has used this symbolism to exemplify their world view and goals for the new American republic.

The First Committee
Our story begins in the afternoon of July 4, 1776 shortly after members of the Continental Congress declared American Independence. On that auspicious day the Congress passed a resolution empowering a committee composed of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to prepare a “device for a seal of the United States of America”.

This seal was to be the official device or coat of arms, so to speak, of the new United States of America which would be used to mark all official documents. As such, the founders wanted its symbolism to represent the people’s vision for the new nation.


To help with the first design, the committee engaged the help of the naturalist and artist Pierre Eugene du Simitiere. Simitiere was a fellow member of Benjamin Franklin’s American Philosophical Society, originally known as the Junto (joined) aka, The Leather Apron Club. The name Leather Apron Club likely originated because many members of the club were tradesmen who wore leather aprons or because many of its members were also Freemasons who were known for their ceremonial leather aprons.

In fact, George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette were both members of APS. According to Masonic legend in 1784, while visiting Mount Vernon, Lafayette (who was also a Freemason) presented the above Masonic apron to George Washington.



In any case, Simitiere was brought in for his skills as an artist. Simitiere presented the committee with the following drawing for the obverse of the seal. There are several fascinating aspects to this seal which should be noted because they help us understand Simitiere’s and by extension the committee’s world view at the time.

First, the six symbols in the center of the shield represent the principle nations from which America was born. They were: England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, and Holland. The motto below the shield read E PLURIBUS UNUM, which was a Latin phrase that meant One Out of Many. Both the shield and the motto convey the old European (Roman) origins of the American people.

On the left side of the shield the goddess Liberty is represented holding a spear or staff with a pileus (Phrygian) cap. Liberty or Libertas, as she was known to the Romans, was the goddess they enshrined when they overthrew the monarchy of the Tarquin kings and established the Roman republic. In 238 BC a temple on Aventine Hill was built to honor the goddess Libertas.


Today, one of the most famous examples of the goddess Libertas is found on Liberty Island in New York City. You and I know the goddess Libertas as the Statue of Liberty or her more formal title Liberty Enlightening the World. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the American people. The statue was designed by the French Freemason sculptor, Frederic Bartholdi.

In Simitiere’s design for the seal, Libertas, in her right hand, is holding a spear or staff with a pileus (Phrygian) cap. In the late Roman republic this cap was a symbol of the return to Roman republicanism. Wikipedia explains:

From Phrygian to liberty cap
In late Republican Rome, a soft felt cap called the pileus served as a symbol of freemen (i.e. non-slaves), and was symbolically given to slaves upon manumission, thereby granting them not only their personal liberty, but also libertas— freedom as citizens, with the right to vote (if male). Following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, Brutus and his co-conspirators instrumentalized this symbolism of the pileus to signify the end of Caesar’s dictatorship and a return to the (Roman) republican system.[2]

These Roman associations of the pileus with liberty and republicanism were carried forward to the 18th-century, when the pileus was confused with the Phrygian cap, with the Phrygian cap then becoming a symbol of those values. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrygian_cap)

On the right side of the shield is an American rifleman with a tomahawk. Here the symbolism speaks for itself.

Finally, at the top of the proposed seal we have the most intriguing symbol of them all. Above the shield is a triangle with an eye at its center with rays of radiance surrounding it. The most common interpretation of this symbol is that it represents Divine Providence bestowing His blessing and/or protection on the new American republic. On the other side, are those who claim this eye in a triangle is the symbol of the Illuminati.

Let’s put the conspiracy theory to rest right up front. There is no credible historical evidence to show that the eye and the triangle was the symbol of the Illuminati. What we do know about the Illuminati is that they marked their communications with the symbol of a point within the circle. Although the point within the circle has a similar symbolic meaning to the open eye, the two symbols are not the same.

To find an 18th century contemporary example of a triangle with the eye of providence inside we must look to French Freemasonry. In France the Grande Orient Lodge was founded in 1728 and one of its most prominent symbols is the All Seeing Eye as represented by their seal in the picture on the right. Note also the date on the Grande Orient seal. If you remember from our previous article, Masonry used Anno Lucis (year of the light) to date many of their official documents.

At some point after 5728 (1728) French Freemasonry started placing the All Seeing Eye inside a triangle. Interestingly, this French Grande Orient Lodge document (below) dated to the year 5775 (1775) shows only a point within the triangle surrounded by the glory cloud. Towards the late 18th century the All-Seeing Eye became much more prominent in French Grande Orient Freemasonic symbolism.



But that is not the entire story. Long before the symbol was appropriated by Freemasonry it was used in devices and buildings of the Holy Roman Empire. One of the first known examples of a triangle with a glory cloud (though missing the “eye of providence”) is found in Aachen cathedral built
(796-805 AD) by Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor.

Another example is found on this coin honoring the coronation of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I dated to 1687 AD. This time the triangle with the glory cloud includes the “eye of providence”. Both of these examples appear in a religious context outside of Freemasonry and their view of God and mankind. If these symbols, as they were used during the Holy Roman Empire, had a deeper occult meaning, I would need more evidence for such symbolism than I’ve been able to find. 

Finally, it should also be noted that the symbol of a triangle with a point at its center is found on ancient Roman coinage honoring among others the god Seraphis. Here are a few examples from Roman coinage showing Thracian and Roman temples.




Freemasonry and the All Seeing Eye

It seems that when the Freemasonry appropriated the symbol of the All-Seeing Eye inside the triangle, the Catholic Church stopped using it. As is well documented in history, the Catholic Church and Freemasonry have long had animosity for each other as well as distinctly different views on religion. Whatever its symbolism was meant to be, when the Continental Congress appropriated this symbol, it was not being used as a Christian symbol at that time, but rather Masonic.

But this is where the story gets really interesting. When the Great Seal of the United States was under review by the committee, America was in the midst of the Revolutionary War. Historically we know that the new American republic was in desperate need of financial and military aid in its early years. To help secure that aid, Benjamin Franklin was dispatched to France as ambassador, serving from 1776 to 1785. As is well documented, Franklin was a member of both United States and French Masonic lodges.


It cannot be a coincidence (our founders were not that naive) that as part of the first committee’s design for the Great Seal, a symbol was used which would have had special appeal to French Freemasonry. The further beauty of the symbol would have been that the Great Seal committee could also legitimately claim “Christian” origins in the Holy Roman Empire, again emphasizing the Roman aspect of the Great Seal’s design.

Clever politics indeed!


But that was just the obverse side of the Great Seal. On the reverse side of the seal Franklin’s proposal of the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea was used (with some changes by Jefferson) and the motto included “Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God”.

I think it is important to note here that this initial design of the Great Seal gives us a unique glimpse into the minds of three of America’s most influential founders. They saw America, first of all, as a new republic patterned after ancient Rome, where its citizens were justified in overthrowing tyrannically monarchal rule just as the ancient Roman’s had done.

One side of the Seal represents the Roman goddess Liberty and her commission to lead the ancient Romans in rebellion against monarchal rule. On the other side of the seal, the Hebrew god of the Bible (represented by the glory cloud) and His mandate to escape the tyrannical rule of Egypt’s Pharoah. Although both sides of the Seal are powerful metaphors for the American Revolution, I think it is only fair to say that neither side represents true Christian imagery.

Even the best laid plans though don’t always work out. And in August of 1776 the committee presented Du Simitiere’s rendering of the design to the Continental Congress. The committee’s hard work was clearly not appreciated by a majority of Congress and the design was tabled, thus effectively killing it.



The Second Committee
Four years later in 1780, another attempt was made to address the lack of an official American seal. By now, the need was rather pressing.

A new committee was established consisting of John Morin Scott, William Churchill, and James Lowell. This time the services of Francis Hopkinson were acquired to help design the seal.

Hopkinson came up with two designs as seen above left. This seal kept the goddess Liberty and her pileus cap but added a glory cloud to the cap. Also kept from the original design was the glory cloud over the shield. Roman numerals for the date were also added. This design was also rejected by Congress.



The Third Committee
Two years later another attempt was made to design a seal for the United States. The committee consisted of John Rutledge, Arthur Middleton, and Elias Boudinot. Sometime later Arthur Lee replaced John Rutledge. This committee also acquired the services of an artist, this time the heraldic expert William Barton.

Barton’s design still incorporated Libertas but without her pileus cap. The cap was moved to the bust on top of the shield. The shield was moved to the obverse side of the seal and a burning torch with a phoenix or eagle was added. A phoenix was also added above the shield. Once again this design expressed the symbolism of Ancient Rome and the quest for renewed Roman republicanism. The phoenix (the rebirth of the republic) was the central symbol of the obverse side of the shield.

On the reverse side Hopkinson added a pyramid of 13 levels over which the “eye of providence” looked. Here the Roman words Deo Favente (God favors) and Perennis (everlasting) were written. Clearly the symbolism here was meant to emphasis the view that the 13 colonies rebellion against British rule was a God ordained enterprise which they hoped/believed would include his everlasting favor. Interestingly, Hopkinson borrowed the pyramid design from the $50 continental note which he had designed in 1778.

Charles Thomson – A Committee of One
The third committee’s design was met with little enthusiasm in Congress and it too was rejected. After this Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, was empowered to take all previous committee’s works and come up with a design. The design we have today comes from the fertile mind of this American founding father.

To better understand the symbolism expressed by Thomson’s seal, a few details about him need to be shared. Thomson could arguably be considered one of the most influential founding fathers due to his service as the Secretary of the Continental Congress for its entirety. Like few others, Thomson understood the intrigue, complexities, and challenges the key players faced in the formation of our new nation. He was there to record them all. Thomson was also a member of Franklin’s American Philosophical Society and as such, he was on the cutting edge of early American enlightenment thought.

Thomson was also a Biblical scholar in his own right. He gave the world the first English translation of the Septuagint as well as the first American English translation of the New Testament. These facts combine to give Charles Thomson a unique insight into the formation of this nation as well as a peculiar world view which he then incorporated into the Great Seal of the United States.

Thomson didn’t waste any time in coming up with a design for the Great Seal. On June 13, 1782, Thomson was given the responsibility of coming up with a design. By June 20, 1782 he submitted his design and it was accepted the same day. Now that is efficiency!



Unique Symbolism
Now that we’ve seen the three committee’s designs and the evolution of these designs we are in a good position to understand how each influenced Thomson’s final design.

What strikes me in looking at all three of the initial Great Seal designs, is their underlying thread emphasizing Roman origins. It is fascinating that our founders saw the new American enterprise as a sort of a revived Roman republic. Thomson kept this idea and amplified it in several clever ways.

On the obverse, of the Great Seal, Thomson used the Roman eagle (sacred bird of the Roman God Jupiter) as the primary motif. In the beak of the eagle is the 13 letter motto, “E Pluribus Unum” (one out of many). Remember this original motto, written in Latin (the language of ancient Rome) graced the first committee’s design below the shield showing the European (Roman) origins of the 13 colonies. Thomson set the new shield in the center of the Roman eagle where he then represented the 13 colonies by red and white stripes.

On the reverse side of the Seal, Thomson included two more Latin phrases which again emphasize the symbolism of ancient Roman. Interestingly, Thomson was a former Latin teacher and the phrase, Novus Ordo Seclorum (A New Order of the Ages) was believed to be inspired by the Roman poet Virgil’s pastoral poem, Eclogue IV. In the poem the priestess Sybill prophesies the fate of the Roman empire. The following translation comes from C.S. Calverley:

Come are those last days that the Sybil sang:
The ages’ mighty march begins anew.
Now come the virgin, Saturn reigns again:
Now from high heaven descends a wondrous race.
Thou on the newborn babe – who first shall end
That age of iron, bid a golden dawn. . .

Thou, trampling out what prints our crimes have left,
Shalt free the nations from perpetual fear.
While he to bliss shall waken; with the Blest
See the Brave mingling, and be seen of them,
Ruling that world o’er which his father’s arm shed peace.

Annuit Coeptis
Annuit Coeptis (favor our undertakings) written above the “eye of providence” is then translated, (using words and symbolism) “Providence has favored our undertaking”. Interestingly, Annuit Coeptis may also be traced to Virgil, this according to the authors Patterson and Dougall, Virgil’s Aeneid, book IX, line 62. The Latin phrase comes from a prayer to the Roman god Jupiter by Ascanius, the hero of the story, just before he slays his enemy, Numanus. It reads, Iuppiter omnipotens, audacibus adnue coeptis,

“Jupiter Almighty, favor [my] bold undertakings”.

I think it important to note here, that even though most of our founding fathers understood the importance of Judeo-Christian principles, they clearly had a rather open minded view of Divine Providence. The early Seal designs shows that many of them were comfortable with both a Hebrew god and the Roman gods and goddess as represented in those designs.

The Pyramid and the Eye
This brings us to the part of the US Seal that has captivated imaginations for nearly 250 years. Thomson took the original eye in the triangle and placed it over Hopkinson’s 13 level pyramid. This modified the original symbolism of an unfinished work of 13 levels and completed it with a representation of “Divine Providence” in a radiant triangle (the point in the circle of Ancient Roman temples, The All Seeing eye of the Holy Roman Empire, French Freemasonry, etc.). As we’ve seen in our exploration of this subject, this representation of the divine presence was likely not meant to be representative of an exclusively Biblical world view. In the spirit of religious inclusiveness demonstrated by ancient Rome, the Great Seal of the United States allows the individual to choose the god they wish to see.

Even so, the context of the Seal leaves open several possible symbolic explanations worth exploring:

1. The first that stands out is the capstone implies a future completed work under the supervision of divine providence. In other words, this new nation, which started with 13 colonies (13 level pyramid), will someday reach a completed and eternal state under god’s supervision (the capstone). Sort of an early American kingdom identity movement, if you will.
2. Another possibility is that Thomson, like the first committee, may have tried to acknowledge the influential role French Freemasonry played in the founding of our new republic. Credit has been given to many people for the first tentative steps taken by our new nation but without Benjamin Franklin and his influential connections to French Freemasonry, we may well have lost the Revolutionary War against the British Empire.
3. Finally, I can’t help but mention what might possibly be the only possible Christian symbolism expressed by the Great Seal of the United States. As I’ve already explained, Thomson had a considerable knowledge of the Bible. Remember, he was the first person to translate the Septuagint into English, and he also gave the world the first American English translation of the New Testament. As such, we must at least consider the possibility that his design may have had another deeper meaning as well.

If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog or if you’ve read my book The 13th Enumeration, then you are aware of the Messianic significance of 13 & 14 in the Bible. For those who aren’t aware, I’ll briefly explain and then show why this may be relevant to the Great Seal.

In the Matthew 1 we have one of the most controversial lineages in the Bible. This lineage tells of Yeshua’s (Jesus) ancestors. What’s fascinating about this list is, that Matthew describes it as three groups of 14 generations. Yet, when the actual names are counted, Matthew only provides 41 names or 14 + 14 +13. This in effect makes Yeshua the 13th generation or what I call the 13th Enumeration of Matthew 1. What is so special about this list is, that by Yeshua’s death and resurrection He became the de facto 14th generation thus completing the list. Then just like king David who is the 14th generation in the first 14 generational grouping, Yeshua became the 14th generation in the third generational grouping. Consider the prophetic words the angel gave to Mary the mother of Yeshua:

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS [Yeshua = YHWH’s Salvation]. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: (Luke 1:31-32)

Now consider another aspect of Biblical symbolism related to the Messiah Yeshua. Can you tell me what symbol Yeshua most often used to describe Himself? If you are thinking of a cross you’d be incorrect. The symbol Yeshua most often used to describe himself was a rejected “stone” which was the “head of the corner”.

And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: This was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? (Mark 12:10-11)

Did you know that Yeshua was quoting Psalms 118:21-23?

I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation [yeshuw’ah]. The stone which the builders refused is become the head [rosh = head, top, summit] stone of the corner [pinnah] This is the YHWH’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. (Psalm 118:21-23)

If you had to describe the head, top, or summit stone of a corner, what geometric shape most literally fulfills such a description? Before you answer that question, consider Paul’s description of Yeshua as it relates to believers being a habitation of God.

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:20-22)


Unfortunately, today many believers see Yeshua as prominent but still just one of many corner stones of a building such as the one pictured on the right. Yet, in Ephesians 2:20 and Psalms 118 the image implied is one of a corner stone which is the head or summit under which all the building is “fitly framed together”.

In other words the only geometric figure which aptly satisfies the symbolism of the prophecy of Psalms 118 and the description found in Ephesians 2:20 is in fact a capstone of a pyramid or the headstone under which all the corners of the building are gathered. Yeshua is the completed work, He is the stone which was rejected by the builders, yet who becomes the Head or Summit of the temple of God.

This symbolism is so important to understand because the adversary had done his work well. Many Christians today see Yeshua as just one of many cornerstones. Yet, today secular humanists picture mankind as the evolutionary capstone of this material world. We’ve replaced the Biblical symbolism of Yeshua as the headstone with mankind as the headstone. If you’ve read all the articles in this series on Mystery Babylon, the idea that mankind is evolving into gods is the very essence of the lie the serpent first told our ancestors in the Eden. Humanism is the religious basis of Babylon.


Allusions of Messianism
Now let’s get back to Thomson’s design on the reverse of the Great Seal. By placing the triangle with the eye inside on top of the 13 level pyramid, Thomson change the symbol from a two dimensional triangle to a three dimensional capstone.

It seems uncanny to me that Thomson would present a design on our Great Seal, which so closely parallels the Old and New Testament symbolism of Yeshua, the human son of Mary – the 13th generation, and Yeshua the divine man, the risen Savior – the 14th generation who will rule the world from the throne of David.

So was it intentional? Was Thomson the Biblical scholar trying to subtly compare the new American republic with prophetic messianic symbolism of Yeshua as the 13th and 14th generation found in the Bible? Or was a deeper spiritual dimension at work?

We’ll probably never have a totally satisfactory answer to that question but it is worthy of consideration. As you’ve probably noted I’ve made no claim that Charles Thomson was a member of Freemasonry, there simply is no credible evidence to suggest that, yet the symbolism of the reverse side of the Great Seal captures the masonry’s world view that we’ve explored in the past several blog posts. Masonry views the United States as a secular humanist utopian work in progress. A work which they believe has been under their supervision from the very beginning.

YHWH willing, in my next post on Symbols of the Harlot (Part V), I’ll tie it all together and share with you some little known American history which shows indisputably that Masonry has long had a guiding plan for the new American Republic, one that they are no longer are trying to keep secret, and a plan that is ultimately in opposition to a Biblical world view.

The Great Seal
In summary then, after all the complex symbolism and history of the Great Seal is considered in context, it becomes apparent that some of our founding fathers saw the new American experiment as a revived Roman Republic whose founding was blessed and justified by both Roman and Hebrew gods. Further, that this new republic was a divine enterprise which would result in a new and possibly eternal order of the ages.

In preparation for the final article in this series, I leave you with a quote attributed to Mackey’s Masonic dictionary concerning the the AllSeeing Eye. Keep these words in mind  because as you will see (excuse the pun) they have great relevance to Masonry’s influence on America’s adventure in Roman republicanism.

The All-Seeing Eye may have denoted the Divine omniscience. Also, it may have symbolized any one or more of some five or six other truths or ideas. It may have denoted the sun originally, as it came up at dawn – it had been thus used by Shakespeare and many other writers. It may have meant the Grand Master or the worshipful Master, and been a reminder of the fact that wherever a man is and in whatever he may be doing he continues to be a Mason, and the eye of the Craft is on him. It may have stood for enlightenment, wisdom, intelligence ; and it may have been the Tracing Board representation of the Blazing Star in the Tessellated Pavement, in which case it was again the sun, or day-star, which shines on through day and night. Symbols of the Harlot – Part III


I’ve got a challenge for you. How many of you can tell me where the painting headlined in this week’s blog post is found, the name of the man in the purple robes, and the meaning of the painting? I’ll give you a hint. The theme of the painting expresses some of the same symbolism as my last blog post Symbols of the Harlot – Part II.

Before I tell you who and what the painting is about, the history surrounding the painting’s location is another fantastic example of the adage that truth is often stranger than fiction.

Our adventure begins in roughly 509 BC on Capitoline Hill in ancient Rome. That hill, one of ancient Rome’s famous seven hills, was the site of a temple built to honor the Roman god Jupiter. Jupiter, it turns out, was the Roman sky god. Wikipedia provides an enlightening description of this Roman deity:

Jupiter is usually thought to have originated as a sky god. His identifying implement is the thunderbolt and his primary sacred animal is the eagle,[2] which held precedence over other birds in the tking of auspices[3] and became one of the most common symbols of the Roman army (see Aquila). The two emblems were often combined to represent the god in the form of an eagle holding in its claws a thunderbolt, frequently seen on Greek and Roman coins.[4]

As the sky-god, he was a divine witness to oaths, the sacred trust on which justice and good government depend. Many of his functions were focused on the Capitoline Hill, where the citadel was located. He was the chief deity of the early Capitoline Triad with Mars and Quirinus.[5] In the later Capitoline Triad, he was the central guardian of the state with Juno and Minerva. Did you know that this bit of ancient history is where we get our English word “capital”? The site word-detective.com fills in a few more details.


The ultimate root of both “capital” and “capitol” is, as you note, the Latin “caput,” meaning “head.” “Capitol” with an “o” first appeared in English in the 14th century, derived directly from the Latin word “capitolium” (a derivative of “caput”) which dates all the way back to the Roman Empire.

The Capitolium was the most important temple in Imperial Rome, dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus (the patron god of the Roman Empire) and located at the summit of the Capitoline Hill. While Jupiter was definitely the “head deity” in town, the temple took its name from its location at the top, or “head,” of the hill.

When “capitol” entered English, it was used both in reference to the original Capitolium in Ancient Rome and, more generally, any citadel, castle, etc., at the “head” of a hill. The use of “capitol” to mean a legislative building is an American invention, most likely tied to our historic fondness for Roman architecture in such buildings. “Capitol” was first applied to the legislative chambers in Washington, D.C., by Thomas Jefferson in 1793. Here is where the story gets nearly unbelievable. You see, nearly 2100 years after ancient Rome honored their god Jupiter with a temple on their Capitoline Hill, a devote Catholic named Francis Pope in the mid 1660’s purchased a piece of land in southern Maryland. Maybe because he had a great sense of humor or for some other reason, no one really knows why, but Mr. Pope named a hill on that piece of land, Rome and a stream running through the property which had been named Goose Creek he renamed the Tiber.

Nearly 130 years later, in 1793, Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State under George Washington renamed Francis Pope’s Rome Hill which in Jefferson’s day was called Jenkins Hill. Wikipedia once again provides the fascinating details:

While serving in 1793 as President George Washington’s Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson named Capitol Hill, invoking the famous Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome.[4] However, the connection between the two is not completely clear.

Maybe Jefferson knew the history of Rome Hill or maybe he was just conjuring nostalgia of the ancient Roman republic, in any case the name Capitol Hill stuck. And just in case you think I’m pulling your leg with some urban legend the following poem was written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore after visiting Washington, D.C., in 1804.

In fancy, now, beneath the twilight gloom,
Come, let me lead thee o’er the second Rome
Where tribunes rule, where dusky Davi bow,
And what was Goose creek once is Tiber now;
This embryo Capital, where fancy sees
Squares in morasses, oblelisks in trees
Which second-sighted seers, even now adorn
With shrines unbuilt and heroes yet unborn.


By now some of you are probably wondering what this history has to do with the painting at the beginning of this blog post. The reason I shared this bit of unusual history is that it provides a fascinating and what can only be described as a strangely congruent context to the painting. You see, in 1865, seventy two years after George Washington and his Masonic brethren laid the cornerstone of our nation’s Capital on Rome hill, the Greek-Italian artist Constantino Brumidi completed the fresco he was commissioned to paint in the dome of the United States Capitol building on Capitol Hill.


The fresco depicts the apotheosis of George Washington, or in other words the painting represents the deification of our nation’s first president. In the painting Washington is sitting in purple robs between the Goddess Victoria and Liberty with the sun at his back (a point within a circle). Surrounding the sun are 13 maidens which are said to represent the original 13 colonies of the early republic.

It is rather ironic really that George Washington’s apotheosis was depicted in the nation’s capital. If he could, he’d likely be rolling over in his grave at the thought. This was a man so concerned with ensuring that our nation be run as a represented republic that he turned down a request to serve a third term as president, yet here just a generation later he is being depicted as our nation’s first god

I don’t know if paradoxical is the right word, but consider the facts of the matter. George Washington, a man who wouldn’t even consider a third term as president, because he wanted to ensure that no single man became too powerful in the new republic (as opposed to the former Roman republic), is depicted as a god, in a building named after a temple dedicated to Rome’s premier god (Jupiter), a building which he helped dedicate with a cornerstone dated to the Masonic year Anno Lucis 5793 (year of the light), this dedication taking place on a hill once named Rome by a devote Roman Catholic, named Francis Pope.

Stranger than fiction indeed!

There were several reasons I shared this history with you. (Besides the fact that it was fascinating). The apotheosis of Washington is another example of the humanist belief in the deification of man outside YHWH’s reconciliation provided by Yeshua. That George Washington was used as the subject of this apotheosis is just a clever way for Constantino Brumidi to disguise a bit of ancient paganism with a cloak of Washingtonian respectability. As discussed in the last article, the Washington Monument was another example of such a clever disguise.

If you are thinking this a bit too much to be a coincidence then consider the words of Albert Pike as quoted by Charles S. Lobinger, in the History of the Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction [Freemasonry]p. 244 )

“Masons do not build monuments to [George] Washington, and plume themselves on the fact that he was a Mason merely on account of his Masonic virtues. It is because his civic reputation sheds glory upon the Order.”

So there you have it. Washington’s name wasn’t used in these iconic American monuments only because of his Masonic qualifications, but rather he had such a great reputation that it conferred respectability upon the Masonic order and their underlying religious beliefs. That this clever deception worked is evidence by the fact that today, many intelligent and well-meaning Christians consider monuments such as the Washington Monument or paintings such as the Apotheosis of Washington evidence of our nation’s Christian heritage, when in fact these examples provide a sobering counterbalance to those claims.

Today there are two extremes when looking our nation’s founding and men and women involved in it. One side claims America was founded as an entirely Christian nation by men and women with strong Christian beliefs. The other side claims most of those same men and women were Deists, Gnostics, and Atheists who only paid lip service to Christianity out of political expediency because Christianity, in one form or another, was the predominate religion of America’s early settlers.

The truth of the matter is that our history is a lot more complicated than that. George Washington for example, was profoundly aware of the necessity of founding our government upon Judeo-Christian values because he understood that any form of government not anchored in divine law could not function in a manner which best served the people. Divine law resides outside the constructs of man, thus (in theory) it cannot be modify or changed to fit the lusts of mankind.

George Washington was a human being just like the rest of us. He had associations, responsibilities, and weaknesses which conspired to undermine the vision he had for this nation. As we’ve seen, his masonic associations are just one example what happens when any of us allow the adversary a foothold in our lives. In Washington’s day Masonry was an incredibly influential ally and it is doubtful that he could have accomplished all that he did without their succor and support. It is also apparent from Washington’s Masonic Correspondence and other historical evidence that he seldom attended lodge meetings and that he had an incomplete knowledge of Masonic affairs. In fact, just a few months before his death, George Washington, being convinced of the danger of secret societies by John Adams (who opposed Freemasonry), used his influence to warn of the dangers secret societies posed to our nation. Unfortunately, as history records, it appears his warning was too little, too late.


Works of Darkness
As I’ve tried to show in these articles, Satan’s humanist lie in Eden hasn’t changed. Since that fateful day long ago mankind has been infected with the belief that by our own efforts we can achieve immortality. The fresco painted by Constantino Brumidi is just one more example.

I do believe America has roots in Judeo-Christian principles, but I also believe that early on during our nation’s founding tares were also sown and those tares have grown to maturity in our generation. As Christians first and Americans second, stewardship demands we not sit idly by as the darkness closes in around us. We must share the light of truth. Paul’s words to the Ephesians seem especially appropriate here:

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:8-17)

I had intended to also write this week about the Great Seal of the United States and its masonic symbolism in an effort to separate the fact from the conspiratorial fiction, but this article was a bit longer than intended, so YHWH willing next time we will explore that fascinating history and symbolism in the light of Biblical truth.
